Kansas/Nebraska Young Adult Camp Meeting

Thursday, April 29, 2010 0:42

Friends, REVIVE is back. And it’s back in full swing, full steam ahead.

AND, we need your help. We are partnering with Matt Gamble and the Young Adult Campmeeting for Kansas/Nebraska on June 4, 5 and 6 to put REVIVE in place.
As we’ve said on our ABOUT page, the project aims to connect secular minded people, possibly even agnostics or atheists with us who love the Lord and through our friendships we can become light to share the message of the gospel to those people.

We are going to use the four meeting times from campmeeting to share some of the themes of REVIVE through the messages delivered by Matt. We will have a very dynamic program that requires a lot of planning and work, and we need your help.

We have a lot of the theme/outline of program/rough script of each presentation, but we need people who can “spice those up”…

We are looking for people who can do or point us to people that can do:

ART - wall displays, table theme decorations, backdrops, 3D environments to walk around, interact with, etc…
FOOD - light snacks, drinks, etc…
DRAMA - people who can represent messages, share dialogues, write scripts, direct
VIDEO - people who can create, film, edit and compile videos
SMILES - greeters, support staff
PASSION - anyone with passion for scripture, discussions, etc…
MUSIC - anyone who can play an instrument and help 2nd Mile

We are having an informal meeting May 1st at College View Church right here in Lincoln, NE (room location and time TBD), so if you are interested, please come join us and let us know if you want to help or know someone who does.

God Chat is Reorganizing

Sunday, January 17, 2010 11:35

Hello everyone,

So it’s really been a long time since a last update here on the site and we technically took a long break, the main issue was that in the summer people’s schedules changed so much, but also that we thought about restructuring God Chat a little more.

The idea is to create a gathering that still focuses on the study of scripture, but we would shorten that up a bit by pre-recording the theme and all the questions so when people come to the gathering, we mostly share what we found.

Let us know any ideas that you have, but we hope to kick start God Chat soon.

Summer Break

Monday, July 6, 2009 16:56

Hello everyone,

As you’ve probably noticed, we’ve been on a Summer break. We plan to pick the dialogues back up again real soon, before the end of July and make them more interactive and fun. We’ll still have our podcasts, but with less people so you can actually hear us commenting and talking. They will be also shorter, so we go through the material faster, and when we meet face to face we can share what we’ve learned (more of a reaction style)…

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,

Marcelo

God Chat - back next week

Friday, May 29, 2009 15:43

Hello all,

We have had another little one added to the Revive/God Chat family, this week a new birth came in the family of our friend and co-founder Emily. Gabriel Skyler is her newest nephew. Because there will be many people missing from our group this week, we’ve decided to have our meeting canceled tonight.

Our live God Chat will begin again next week. In fact, we will be live from College View Church’s camp meeting and we will be connecting live on TalkShoe, directly to the program and sermon, who will be brought to us by Ty Gibson from Light Bearer’s Ministry at 7:30 pm next Friday, June 5.

If you are going to be around the area in Lincoln, NE, please come over to Union College.

Here’s Union College’s official address:
3800 S. 48th St.
Lincoln, NE 68506

The Young Adult camp meeting will happen at Woods Auditorium. Click on the map for an exact location.

Ty has a very impressive picture of God, and you should not miss any of his talks. There will be two more on Saturday/Sabbath morning at 12:00 pm and Saturday/Sabbath evening again at 7:30 pm.

Hope to see everyone there or online. You don’t want to miss it.

6- Where to Find the Evidence? - Gathering

Friday, May 15, 2009 11:12

Hello everyone.

Hope you guys had a good week. I want to invite you to join God Chat this week once again. Last week we didn’t meet because of the graduation festivities. But we are back on. This week we are going to question and evaluate the source of all the evidence we have been talking about so far. We are going to continue to focus on discovering the true character of God. But how can we be sure that we have the right books in the bible? How do we know this source is reliable and accurately translated? And once we have the word how can we really understand what the message is all about? These are just a few things we will be discussing during God Chat this week.

–>Please come, bring a friend, bring your opinion, and join us at my house at 7:30 p.m. CST if you are around the area, or online at 8:00 p.m. CST here on the website. You will find a Talkshoe link that will take you to our live or recorded sessions. You will be able to chat via messages about our discussion or if you choose you can call in and chat by talking. I hope to see you all there.

Face to Face meeting address:
3711 Faulkner Dr. Apt. 305
Lincoln, NE 68516

Call me if you you have any questions.
Thanks and have a great day!

The Patriot Bible vs. The Word of God

Wednesday, May 6, 2009 16:17

Hello all,

Perusing through my friend’s profiles on Facebook, there was a post from one of my friends about the recent analysis of the new survey by Pew Research Center for the People & the Press from Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life.

The analysis shows that their sample of white evangelicals, and those who attend a religious service at least weekly is shown as supporting the use of torture in order to gain information from terrorists.

What interested me the most aside from an interesting discussion with people on Facebook about politics, religion, “what Jesus would do?” was a post I read on Greg Boyd’s blog where he talks about this survey but also about the new American Patriot’s Bible, from Thomas Nelson Publishing.

American Patriot's Bible

It goes along with the topic of the survey very well, because that bible is filled with imagery of soldiers waving the American flag, tanks, jets, tying the Gospels with the war heroes, the wars won, etc…

Greg makes the point that Jesus Christ is not a militant war god. He is not a person that would use the sword to get His kingdom established, in fact, right before His crucifixion, when Pilate asked Him about His kingdom, He said, “My kingdom does not belong to this world; if my kingdom belonged to this world, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish authorities. No, my kingdom does not belong here!” John 18:36 GNT

If God’s kingdom is not made of fighting, war, swords or tanks, does that mean we shouldn’t have a military, earthly protection or etc…? That’s not the point, the point is whether we have a Christianity that wins by the sword or one that shows love by saying, “we believe in God and in his words about loving our enemies, doing good to those who hurt us, praying for those who persecute us, that we will trust in Him to save us from any threat.” God may very well provide all the protection we need. Who knows, we may then never need a military, but would we trust God enough for that?

That is what He wanted to do with Israel, but Israel over and over again wanted to fight, so He stooped down to their level and helped them fight. It was not always like that though, when the walls of Jericho fell down, when Gideon’s army was but 300 people against the Midianites, and many others. Like we have said in our dialogues and in this blog, God deals with us where we are, therefore sometimes He will speak in military terms, helps us form a military, even help us fight. However, believing that is the ideal is incredibly damaging to our picture of God. God is a God of peace and not war. Also, He is not a God of peace through war.

Through this bible our society can clearly see one huge example of the two contrasting sides of Christianity, “Love your enemies” vs. “blow their brains out in the name of Christ”.

What’s your picture of God? Take a read at Greg’s article and share your thoughts.

We’re in Good Company

Wednesday, May 6, 2009 14:35

Hello all,

We have been studying, dialoguing and sharing our ideas and thoughts about God and His character for the past month. It’s been great fun, and we’ve had some great interaction face to face and listening on TalkShoe as well. We haven’t been alone in our endeavor to learn about God’s character. Before us came great people, kings, governors, theologians, shepherds, fishermen, tax collectors, preachers, sailors, nomads, etc… people just like you and me, who have understood the wonderful picture of God, His love, acceptance, mercy, justice (not to be confused with execution of judgment), grace.

Our view of God is the most important thing we can ever have in order to become friends who trust Him. If God is a vengeful, selfish, unforgiving, severe, arbitrary person it is virtually impossible to become His friend. We can become His servants, but not His friends. Throughout history there have been many servants of God, but few friends. The bible calls Abraham God’s friend, “And so Abraham was called God’s friend.” James 2:23 TEV. Moses, David and a few others were also ranked among those who are God’s friends, but the overall majority of God’s people were not singled out as His friends. They feared, they trembled, they were scared of God. One time the people of Israel even begged God to stop talking because they were afraid just His voice would consume them,“Speak to us yourself (Moses) and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.” Exodus 20:19 NIV. Was there reason to be scared of Him if Moses wasn’t? Was it because Moses was a better behaving child? How about him killing the Egyptian? How about his stubbornness, unbelief, lack of faith? Clearly the reason was not because of who Moses was, but what Moses understood God to be.

If we look at the Old Testament with the idea that God is different than Jesus, we might very well come to the conclusion that we should fear, be scared, tremble before God, not desiring to get close to God lest we die. If our picture of God is based only on the executions of judgment pronounced on those who didn’t do what God said, we may very well have quite a distorted picture of Him.

We will, in one of our dialogue nights, take a look at the God of the Old Testament and try to paint a picture of the reasons, the motives behind those incredibly terrifying acts of God, but for now, we should understand that God was not fully revealed to humanity until a certain point in time, when the full revelation of His character was shown.

Jesus Christ came in human flesh, helpless as a little baby to be close to humanity in hopes we can understand the true picture of God. Christ said later in His life, “I made you known to them, and I will continue to do so, in order that the love you have for me may be in them, and so that I also may be in them.” John 17:26 GNT. Christ declared that He made God known to the world. When Phillip, one of his disciples asked Him to show them the Father, “Jesus answered, “For a long time I have been with you all; yet you do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” John 14:8 GNT

Now, a mere declaration of Jesus means absolutely nothing, unless it is backed up by evidence, demonstration of its accuracy. To that, for the people of Christ’s day, the author of Hebrews writes, “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” Hebrews 1:1-3 NIV

The demonstration of the exact representation of God in Christ came in the way Christ dealt with people, which seemed so different than the way God dealt with people in the past. Was it God’s problem or the people’s problem? We can’t teach calculus to a five year old that needs to learn how to sit down and behave at the dinner table, correct? So at the time God had to deal with them where they were. One time He even said about them, “The people of Israel are as stubborn as mules. How can I feed them like lambs in a meadow?” Hosea 4:16 GNT.

Christ is the full revelation of God and the ultimate demonstration of that came when He was given all power from above, and this time He did not use it to whip people into shape, to scare them into serving Him, or all these other assumptions we have when explaining the God of the Old Testament, “Jesus knew that the Father had given him complete power; he knew that he had come from God and was going to God. So he rose from the table, took off his outer garment, and tied a towel around his waist. Then he poured some water into a washbasin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel around his waist.” John 13:3-5 GNT

The all-powerful God of the Universe, who created all things decided that the fullness of His character was to be revealed in bodily form. He took the form of a mere human, through an embryo and grew within the imperfections of the human body, the dependency of an infant upon his parents, the struggle to fit in through childhood, the awkwardness of adolescence, living among the poorest of Israel, among the lowly, without any particularly special physical trait, to show us who God is.

This is absolutely mind-boggling. It is so incredible, so precious, so inspiring to understand what God did when He came down from heaven. He chose to become one of us, then in return, when He was given all power, He knelt down and SERVED all His disciples. He washed their feet, their dirty, filthy, scabby feet, hoping that they would understand the point that He is willing to wash their character, He is willing to wash our character of our misconceptions about the kind of person He was, about the kind of God He was.

Please do not ever miss the point that God is just like Jesus, He loves you with unconditional love, He’s just hoping that we understand that and turn from fearing Him, trembling to get close to Him and instead that we become His friends.

In itself, these phrases might seem like mere claims, and to that argument of the evidence to believe in God and scripture, there’s a wonderful presentation given by Dr. Greg Boyd, of Christus Victor Ministries given at the Good News Tour, held in March 2009, in Vancouver, Canada.

Enjoy your week,

Marcelo
